About NCCF

Network for Certification and Conservation of Forests (NCCF) came into existence in January 2015 as a non-profit organisation, registered as a Society, to have a globally aligned certification program developed within India and addressing the concerns for sustainable management of forests and the plantations, while at the same time making the Indian wood and forest fiber based industry competent globally.

Brief - Network for Certification and Conservation of Forests (NCCF) is a non-profit organisation, registered as a Society, to have a globally aligned certification program developed within India. NCCF is working towards developing national sustainability certification standards in diverse areas of natural resource management, majorly forestry, trees outside forests, protected areas and wetlands, non-wood forest products, quality planting material, ecotourism, biofuels, sustainable mining and water quality etc. and also engaged in policy advocacy and diverse conservation activities.

The NCCF has got support from the key forest based stakeholders such as the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) through its premier institutes like Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), Indian Council for Forestry, Research and Education (ICFRE) and Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institutes (IPIRTI), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare,Ministry of Commerce and Indutsry Export Promotions Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), ITC Ltd., Green Initiatives Certification & Inspection Agency(GICIA),Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA), Greenply, Dabur, Arya Vaidyasala, Kottakal ,Paper and Plywood Industries and many more in furtherance of its objectives

“India is the National Governing Body Member of PEFC”

History - Forest Management Certification is a voluntary tool that optimises and enhances Forest Management Practices via market incentives. Forest certification found its roots in the concern over rapid tropical deforestation in 1980s and 1990s (Merry and Carter 1996, Kiekens 2003).The objective of controlling depletion of tropical forests and prevention of its illegal logging was the primary motivation for the introduction of Forest Management Certification schemes as the preferred method for sustainable management of forests. There are currently two mainstream operational Forest Management Certification schemes available on a global level ; FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) launched in 1993 , PEFC (Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification) founded in 1999.

The general consensus in the forestry and sustainable development community is that Forest Management Certification has been beneficial towards responsible forest management and therefore should be further promoted. However, the aforementioned Forest Management Certification schemes are by design generic in nature so as to be applicable on a global level without any specificity to particular countries for long, and as such are not pragmatic enough for uniform application by all countries within their jurisdictions. India is among the world’s most forested countries with a growing demand for forest products considering the diversity in the forests, the unsustainable management of forest is a significant challenge for India as a developing country. There is a growing realization among different forest/plantation based stakeholders of the country that India needs to develop Forest Certification standards and systems, which governs the management of forest & forest produce on the principles of sustainable forest management (SFM) and ensures inspection, validation & verification of SFM parameters, and be eventually endorsed by a well recognized international body in the field of forest certification. NCCF came into existence in January 2015 with an objective to establish a country specific forest certification scheme and promote responsible forest management in the Country.
